Hello,
I am Arthur J. Byrnes. I work for the world's leading aerospace university.
Since I don't speak for the university, it will remain unnamed for now.
We have a disk to disk backup system that is about 1 1/2 years old.
I am sort of an evangelist for disk to disk backup. It is a lot easier to do then most people think. Yes there is an upfront cost, but not having to track tapes and eliminating the problems caused by bad or glitchy tapes, is worth it.
File recovery time is now measured in minutes rather than hours.
If you are not doing disk to disk backup, you are wasting your time and your employer's money.

Hi Arthur - welcome!
Interesting point you just made - we are having a discussion around whether tape is dead on another thread - http://backupheroes.com/showthread.php?19-Is-Tape-Dead
So many people are reluctant to move away from tape - would love your insights from conversations you have had with your peers

Hey all,
Gregory Tellone here from Continuity Centers, headquartered in New York. I've been in the backup and recovery business since 1992 when I began my career as a tech support engineer at Cheyenne Software, the original developers of ARCserve tape backup software for Novell Netware, OS/2 and Windows. After a few years there, I moved to McKinsey & Company where I worked on the server and network infrastructure team and built out a disaster recovery plan with IBM, after evaluating IBM, Sungard and Comdisco.
When we started Continuity Centers, our mission was to create secure, affordable recovery services that would bring peace-of-mind to the small and mid-sized business. Since our inception in 1999, we've grown from a regional business in the New York Metro Area to a company providing recovery services across North America. We incorporate the recovery of people and business processes along with recovery of the technology infrastructure. We currently have three Tier I hot-sites in New York with Tier II workgroup recovery facilities throughout the country.
My role as the COO is to develop and maintain processes to ensure smooth onboarding and 100% recovery of our Members' infrastructure. As a "recovering geek", I'm also involved with sales and marketing, whenever I'm not designing a recovery network for a new Member.
I'm glad to see some familiar names here and look forward to contributing in any way I can.

Hi Everyone,
I'm Andrew Hargreave, President of agh3 Consulting LLC. agh3 Consulting offers technology consulting services to small businesses in the Chicago-land area. I've been in IT since 1984 and managed networks for many companies large and small. One of my new services I'm offering to my small business clients is offsite backup services. I've used most of the services out in the industry (Mozy, CrashPlan, etc.) and got into a branded solution last year with Remote-Backup.com but have moved to Vembu StoreGrid a few months ago.
Getting small businesses to understand backups in general and the advantages of offsite backups is a real challenge. I look forward to discussing and learning from everyone here!

Hey James, thanks for the email and sorry for the late reply. I had a question for you that hopefully you could help me with. If not, maybe some advise on the best place to post this. Thanks. See below:
Retention Policies
We are running into customers with extensive tape legacy backgrounds. They want to apply the tape retention (ie GFS - Grandfather, Father, Son) structure to the Asigra platform. The issue is its' increasing the size of our backups deeming the solution to be not economically viable for the customer.
The question is are there other members dealing with the same issue and what are they doing from a data management perspective to both satisfy the customer and keep the costs down?
Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, All,
I'm Phil Collins (no, not that one.), I work for EMC managed services in the UK. I manage a large installation for one of our customers, with 7 datazones across 9 sites spread across Europe. I've been working in the world of backup for far too long, after a history as a hardware engineer. My expertise (as you'd expect) is mainly in the world of Networker, but I've dipped a toe into Netbackup, Commvault and a few other products.

Hello all
My name is Martin Lea and I am a Business Development and Sales Executive for RMT Technology, based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
RMT Technology is the IT Division of RMT Accountants & Business Advisors, so my side of the business consists of qualified IT experts with some qualified accountants.
Our client base is varied but all have one thing in common - Backups!
We're finding that as data volumes grow, data growth management is fast becoming a major concern.
I hope that by being part of this forum, I can learn from others and share my experiences of this phenomena.
Cheers for now

Hello,
I am Doug Kennard, currently a pre-sales Engineer for Symantec specializing in Data Center solutions (file system, volume management, clustering, DR, archiving and data protection (NBU and BE).
I've been here over 12 years starting w/Veritas in 1999. Prior to that, I worked various roles for 10+ years at StorageTek and spent many years prior to StorageTek doing break/fix and processor upgrades on old 3090/44xx mainframes so i've been around the backup and datacenter world for a while. Have seen the evolution of bus/tag channel cables to where we are today.
Looks like a great place to share thoughts and ideas.
Feel free to contact me any time.
